The Role Canvas is a tool for defining and documenting individual roles within a circle. It provides clarity on the purpose of a role, the responsibilities it entails and how it is embedded within the organisation. Unlike the more comprehensive Circle Constitution Canvas, the Role Canvas focuses on the specific structure of an individual role. Among other things, it describes the role name, purpose, area of responsibility, beneficiaries, current role holder, election procedure and timeframe. In addition, the workload, budget, deputisation and necessary resources can be recorded.
This documentation makes it clear who is currently responsible for which area of responsibility and how this responsibility was legitimised. Roles are not fixed positions, but rather time-limited areas of responsibility that can be reviewed regularly and reassigned as required. Together with the Circle Constitution and the Delegation Matrix, the Role Canvas forms an important foundation for transparency and collaboration. It reduces ambiguity, minimises the need for coordination and reinforces the understanding that leadership in a self-managed organisation is tied to roles rather than to individuals.
