4. The circle constitution canvas

The Circle Constitution Canvas is a tool for designing and documenting the constitution of a circle. It provides clarity regarding the circle’s remit, working methods and integration into the wider organisation. The Canvas describes both the internal organisation – such as purpose, members, roles, decision-making processes and working meetings – and the external context, including customers, suppliers, resources, regulatory frameworks, and strategic and economic aspects. At the same time, it documents the link to the parent circle from which the circle derives its mandate.

Each circle draws up its constitution upon its formation. Certain elements, such as purpose, members, roles and decision-making principles, form part of the mandatory core structure, whilst the circle itself determines the remaining details. The Canvas is not a static document. It is reviewed regularly and adapted in line with organisational changes, ensuring that roles, processes and responsibilities always reflect the current way of working.
