The illustration ‘Discussion hand symbols’ shows hand signals that groups can use to structure and guide discussions. They create an additional level of communication through which feedback can be given without interrupting the flow of the conversation. The signals serve various functions: requesting the floor and giving direct replies, expressing agreement, disagreement or a need for clarification, as well as providing guidance on the course of the discussion – such as returning to the topic, bringing the discussion to a close or taking a break. Proposals regarding the process and a veto can also be signalled in this way.
This enables the whole group to take responsibility for ensuring a smooth flow of discussion. It takes the pressure off the facilitator, allows opinions to emerge more quickly and helps to clear up misunderstandings at an early stage. This results in structured, efficient and, at the same time, participatory discussions – even in larger groups.
