The diagram ‘The needs triangle’ is based on Theme-Centred Interaction (TCI) and illustrates the three perspectives that should be taken into account in every decision: ‘I’, ‘We’ and ‘Organisation’. The surrounding environment serves as a reminder that every organisation is also influenced by external conditions. Self-organisation can only succeed if these three levels remain in balance. Personal needs, teamwork and the organisation’s purpose must all be given equal consideration. If one perspective is consistently overemphasised, tensions and conflicts arise.
The Needs Triangle helps teams to openly address differing interests and consciously balance their decisions. The guiding principle is this: the needs of the individual are important – but ultimately, decisions must serve the organisation’s common purpose and its ability to act.
