The diagram ‘Leaving the group’ describes the seventh and final stage of objection resolution – the Ultima Ratio. It is only used when, despite intensive clarification, it is no longer possible to find common ground for a necessary decision.
In this situation, the convictions of an individual member and the organisation’s ability to act are irreconcilably at odds. If a decision is necessary for the organisation’s continued existence, a separation may occur.
This may take place voluntarily if a member realises that they can no longer follow the group’s path. Alternatively, the group may initiate a separate consensus-building process to decide on the member’s continued membership. This decision must be strictly separated from the original issue at hand. Regardless of the outcome, the group bears responsibility for ensuring the process is conducted respectfully and fairly. The principle behind this is clear: every voice counts – yet no one should permanently render the organisation incapable of acting.
