The diagram ‘Resistance query 10-stage’ illustrates the Systemic Consensus-Building process. Rather than asking who is in favour of a proposal, this method assesses the level of resistance to it. Each person rates every option on a scale from 0 (no resistance) to 10 (maximum resistance). The scores are then added up. The solution with the lowest overall resistance is selected – in other words, the one that can be most widely supported by the group. The status quo is also always assessed as a separate alternative.
This method is particularly suitable for complex decisions involving multiple options, for prioritising issues, and for collegial role elections. Key factors include neutral moderation, clearly formulated alternatives and – in the case of sensitive issues – anonymous assessment. This results in transparent decisions that enjoy a high level of acceptance.
