The diagram shows the double connector – the classic model for linking two neighbouring circles in sociocracy and holacracy. Under this model, the upper circle sends a representative to the lower circle, whilst the lower circle elects another person to the upper circle. Both are full members of both circles and ensure the flow of information in both directions.
The double connector offers a balanced representation of interests, reduces role conflicts and makes cooperation between the circles more robust. At the same time, however, it increases the coordination effort, enlarges the circles and is often perceived in practice as being too formal or bureaucratic. For this reason, this model is particularly suitable for organisations that consistently operate according to sociocratic or holacratic principles, or that place a particularly high value on mutual oversight. Many self-managed organisations, by contrast, prefer the single connector. It is leaner and more flexible, but requires the connecting person to be able to handle potential role conflicts effectively.
